Nigeria’s Federal Government has rolled out over N140 billion (US$368M) for the Asolar Naija solar connection scheme in a bid to address unreliable electricity generation and supply in the country.
The project is set to generate solar-powered electricity in five million homes in off-grid communities.
Powered by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the project, which saw the release of 100,000 domestic solar systems at Jengefe community in Jigawa state, will address the unstable power supply in the country.
Nigerian Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo who unveiled the power said that it is anchored towards not only power generation but job creation and the improvement of the standard of living of Nigerians, noting the project’s function to help the country out of its poor electricity supply.
“Renewable energy is cheap and environmentally friendly. The project objective is to expand energy access to 25 million individuals through 5 million new connections with the provision of solar home system,” he offered.
